ERASMUS+ PROJECT
Final Report
As identified in the project application, the project set out to increase students' abilities in STEM subjects, as well as to develop investigation, problem-solving, team-working and leadership skills. The original project plan arose from the use of E-Twinning as a tool to enhance the KS3 Computer Science curriculum through pa rticipation in the Global Citizen Scheme. As part of this scheme, participants were keen to develop each of the Global Citizen fluencies, comprising Media, Information, Solution, Creativity and Collaboration – all of which are intrisically linked to STEM and wider curricula in each school. Additional aims of the project were to make links between the traditional and cultural and the new, modern society and technology.
The project achieved the following results in accordance with the original overarching project priorities:
- The project successfully highlighted the importance of social cohesion and equal opportunities for all. Not only did the project raise an appreciation among participants for different cultures and traditions; but it also provided an opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to unite, support one another and work collaboratively to enrich their future aspirations and educational outlook. Theses notions of cohesion, cultural recognition and equal opportunities for all have been incorporated into further projects at QKA involving Roma students and their families, for example our Roma of Great Ability project in conjunction with Cambridge University aimed at increasing Roma representation in student school leadership schemes.
- Through workshops, supported by local organisations and businesses, students were able to develop a wide range of skills in relation to global citizenship. This included teamwork, problem-solving, communication and creativity, as well as valuable STEM competences (Maths, Science, Computer Science and Technology) which they can apply to their future studies and career paths. Moreover, the project raised the profile of careers relating to STEM skills and encouraged students from different social, economic and cultural students to reflect on and elevate their own aspirations for the future.
- Participants were able to encounter and explore more innovative practices in the field of technology. At QKA, for example, students and staff successfully created an Eggbot machine to create handicraft linked to cultural festivals. Although the workshop was unable to go ahead due to school closures and travel restrictions, project participants at QKA had the opportunity to programme this machine and produce prototypes. Prince Pribina Primary School focused on making three dimensional entities by printing, where consecutive films and layers of a particular material are laid down under the computer control. The objects that are created in 3D printers can be of any shapes or sizes.
- During workshops in each of the participating nations, a range of products were manufactured by participants. Not only did these experiences reflect the development of Global fluencies, but they were also underpinned by traditions and culture with a common theme of 'diversity reaching for unity'. Effective teamwork, the development of different skills sets and a motivation from all those involved to absorb different cultures and traditions into the creation of tangible and appealing products, resulted in the following outcomes:
Slovakia successfully made links with a local TV station and used multiple forms of innovative media outlets to create a comic book based on local folklore. Poland created a board-game based on prominent Polish personalities in history. Hungary produced art paintings inspired by local artists.
The Czech Republic produced an interactive game based on religion, as well as recordings of contemporary inspired songs in different languages, influenced by traditions and cultural practices.
Each product created was s trikingly very different; nonetheless each product fulfilled the innovative objective to celebrate traditions and cultural customs using modern and innovative technology. Each product reflected the development of common global fluencies, centered on the project's overriding theme of 'diversity reaching for unity'. Unfortunately, due to school closures brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, the final mobility in the UK was unable to go ahead. During this final mobility, it was intended that all participants would take part in a cumulative exhibition showcasing the outcomes of the project, including students' newly acquired skills, Global fluencies and STEM competences. This would have also served as an opportunity to demonstrate the power of ‘Unity’ and international project work to promote cultural and social cohesion. This is something that we hope to do virtually in the near future.
